Juniors (Grades 7-12)

Have fun, get fit, and compete. Row!

Rowing is the ultimate team sport. It provides a great total body workout. You can learn the basics quickly, yet mastering the sport can be a lifelong endeavor. Crew is fun, mentally challenging and develops the athlete’s focus, attention to detail, respect for one's self and others, and resilience. Check out this video for an overview.

North Suburban Crew Juniors is for young women in grades 7-12 from all over the Chicagoland area. We offer a Spring and Fall competitive rowing program, indoor winter training, and summer developmental and recreational programs. Our athletes are one team comprised of young women from several different schools.

NSC Juniors offer 'Learn to Row' year-round

NSC Juniors Summer Learn to Row Camps get athletes on the water quickly with hands-on instruction in boat handling, safety, balance, and stroke fundamentals. In small groups, rowers try both sculling and sweep, learn coxswain commands and teamwork, and finish camp ready to join our seasonal programs - no experience required.

To fit busy school calendars, NSC Juniors also offers short-format Learn to Row classes at the start of fall (late August) and spring (mid March), plus Learn to Erg sessions during winter training (December-February). These clinics build technique and fitness on land and water - perfect for first-timers or returning athletes who want a refresher before the season begins.

North Suburban Crew Juniors' Mission

NSC JUNIORS strives to inspire in our team a lifelong love of rowing and fitness, to provide opportunities for rowers to successfully compete in the sport, to teach respect for oneself and others, and to impart a drive to achieve on the water and in future endeavors.

Our vision is to emphasize good sportsmanship, encourage teamwork, and build strength of character and resilience in each oarswoman.

Expand your college opportunities

NSC Alumni have continued their rowing careers at a wide range of respected collegiate programs, including George Washington, Kansas, Holy Cross, Notre Dame, Tufts, Santa Clara, Skidmore, Colgate, Princeton, Syracuse, and more. Many of our athletes arrive at NSC with no prior experience and develop the skills, discipline, and competitive mindset that prepare them for the next level of the sport.

By training in a supportive yet challenging environment, they not only achieve success on the water but also gain the confidence to pursue rowing opportunities at Division I, II, and III programs across the country. Our alumni network is a point of pride for the club, inspiring current Juniors to see how far the sport can take them—both athletically and academically.

Athletic and academic standards

Although North Suburban Crew is an independent club, we hold our athletes to IHSA (Illinois High School Sports Association) standards during the academic year. Many schools recognize NSC participants with Varsity Letters or Student-Athlete honors.

Our athletes come from a wide range of schools, including Niles West, Glenbrook South, Deerfield, Evanston, New Trier, Lake Forest Academy, Vernon Hills, and more. Middle school rowers have joined us from Attea, Baker Demonstration, Wilmette Junior High, Washburne, and several others.

If your school isn't listed, you are still welcome - our team is open to all students, and we look forward to adding new schools to the list each year.

Head Coach & Assistant Coaches

NSC is proud to have Chloe Jacobi as the Head Coach for our Juniors Program.

Coach Jacobi rowed with Indiana University Women's Crew. She was awarded the Big Ten Medal of Honor upon her graduation with a degree in Sports Marketing and Management.

Coach Jacobi's passion for the rowing and her team was so great that, after her collegiate rowing career was cut short due to injury, she transitioned into a managerial role for the team. In addition, she interned with IU's Athletic Department for two years. There, she developed expertise in designing goal-oriented training programs and coached athletes through sport-specific strength and conditioning sessions. Throughout this work, her primary focus was the rowing team.

Coach Jacobi's coaching philosophy focuses on fostering personal growth while developing athletes in a positive and competitive setting. She believes in setting short-term goals as stepping stones to long-term success, a mindset inspired by her college team's motto: “Rome was not built in a day.”

Assistant Coaches

Cooper Choldin is a former NSC Junior Competitive Rower. This is her third summer coaching Learn to Row for NSC! Cooper is currently a student at the University of Denver and we are thrilled to welcome her back for the summer.

Alexandra Walsh is a recent graduate from Eastern Michigan University. She was on EMU’s D1 Women’s Rowing Team. She’s heading to Boston in the fall to pursue her master’s degree.
